A STORY: HOW THIS WORK STARTED
Sometimes, the smallest moments set the stage for the biggest transformations.
For me, it began on an ordinary afternoon during the height of the Covid pandemic. Life had ground to a halt, leaving us isolated in our homes, longing for connection and clarity. I lived in the Bay Area then, and on that day, stepping away from the relentless cycle of online meetings to sit outside under the California sun, I realized how profoundly unfulfilled I felt.
On paper, I’d done everything right. My résumé told a story of success: advanced degrees, a career in Big Tech, a life of achievement. But under these accolades, my life felt very different. I was chasing a version of success that left me constantly striving, anxious, and drained.
The cracks in the foundation had been there for a long time, but that day I felt them more acutely than ever. My career, social life, and sense of purpose—all of it felt like a house of cards on the verge of collapse again. I kept asking myself, “How did I get back here? Why do the same patterns keep repeating?”
And then it hit me: there was something fundamentally wrong in the system I had built.
For years, I’d been running on autopilot, driven by external measures of success and validation. I chased a career I didn’t love, built relationships that lacked depth, and ignored the quiet dissatisfaction simmering beneath the surface. I was trapped in cycles of avoidance, numbing myself in socially acceptable ways to cope with the dissonance.
That day, I saw I wasn’t just chasing the wrong goals—I was chasing them with the wrong tools. My efforts were fueled by ego and a deep hunger for external validation as a patch for unresolved tension within. I had reached the car I’d been chasing all my life, only to realize it was empty.
But that moment of reckoning became a turning point. A deeper realization took hold: to find what I needed to stop chasing the empty car and to help others do the same. I wanted to build a life guided by intentions and means that truly served me, rooted in a deeper understanding of how to make the most of my single experience of life, and to help others seeking to make their own shifts do the same.
I left Big Tech behind, packed my life into storage, and embarked on a transformative journey. I spent months living in an RV, immersed in nature and introspection. I devoured books, attended courses, and worked with a coach and therapist to resolve internal dissonance. Science had always been my compass, and I dove deeply into research, seeking a model that could integrate everything I was learning to share with others.
And then I found it.
At a conference brimming with innovators and thought leaders, I encountered a framework that shifted everything: the Active Inference Cycle and Free Energy Principle. It was a scientific model, but it was also a deeply human one. It revealed how we navigate uncertainty, adapt to change, and have the opportunity to shape our lived reality.
As I learned more about active inference, its principles began to transform my daily life. I wasn’t just learning new ideas—I was living them. It reshaped how I ate, moved, connected, and rested. It challenged me to rethink old patterns and make space for new possibilities.
The tools I had found weren’t about perfection or control. They were about increasing harmony and adaptation, helping me embrace both the messiness and beauty of being human. Being human is never something we “master.” It’s a constant unfolding, a dance between uncertainty and clarity. This research isn’t a guide to perfection—it’s an invitation to explore, adapt, and grow.
This research grew from that journey. As I continued learning and integrating active inference, I realized this was much more than just my own experience. I had been stuck in ineffective cycles for years, despite dedicating resources to break free. I had searched desperately for a way off the wheel, and I kept seeing others in the same position—lacking either the opportunity or knowhow to do so. The skillset I had built in Big Tech and academia combined with my transformative experience now served a new purpose: to disseminate this research.
My hope is through various means of dissemination we’ll be able to help others discover not just the science behind active inference and free energy but its potential to reshape their lives life. Whether you’re navigating big changes or looking to adapt to the increasing pace of change, this collection of science based concepts can be a powerful resource. No single path looks the same, but in learning to navigate uncertainty with clarity, we gain increased freedom to shape our own unfolding.
